Bungie: Halo 3 Content for “Two More Years”

Even with ODST coming out on the Xbox 360 later this year, Bungie still plans developing content for Halo 3 — for the next two years. The news comes from producer Allen Murray, who spoke in front of a live crowd at a GDC panel in San Francisco, CA.

“Halo 3 took two and a half years to make, and we’re still working on it. We’ll probably be working on it for two more years.”

Considering Bungie cut ties with Microsoft awhile ago, it’s pretty amazing the company plans on still working for the Halo 3 community. The team is even working on more than one project right now for the two year-old game, and at the same time, the company has grown internally. Because of the growth, Bungie confirmed that they are also working on a number of new concepts that has nothing to do with the Halo universe and plans on releasing them in the future. Who knows what that is, but I pray it’s not an ‘Oni‘ remake — that game was terrible. Well, in my opinion anyway.

Bungie: A BILLION Halo 3 Matches have Been Played

According to Bungie, Halo 3 had officially played its one billion match on Saturday night. That’s right, the first-person shooter has reached a billion matches played using the Xbox Live service. The team behind the the game said the following;

“At precisely 6:36pm PST, in a three minute and nineteen second game of Infection on Foundry, four players participated in Halo 3′s one billionth match. Saturday night, while many of us were stuffing food into our faces, plenty of folks were still playing Halo 3.”

I don’t know what is more scary, the fact that Bungie can watch and count every Halo game played or that millions of gamers around the world, who have combined to play over a billion matches.

What’s even more interesting about the whole affair is how Halo 3 has already surpassed Halo 2 for how many games have been played online. Right now, Halo 2 sits at 798 million matches. Even though the game came out a few years before the third installment, it is still quite a few matches behind and probably will never catch up.

Video: Halo 3 + Final Fantasy Mashup

In the future, when Halo has run its course, and we have sequel after sequel and then we get a few spin offs, I’m pretty sure we’ll see an RPG form of the series. Now, in case you are wondering what that will eventually look like, CriousGamers over at youtube has given us a tease.

They created a video using the Halo 3 Forge, but later added some Final Fantasy music with an RPG type menu system. The video is pretty clever, however, it’s a tad to long. After viewing the first minute — you’ll be all set.

Halo 3 Wedding (Video)

John Henry met his now bride Desirai Labrada while playing Halo 3 on Xbox Live. After dating for a little while, the couple decided to get married. Because of how they came together, Desirai had the “brilliant” idea of having their marriage Halo themed. And they didn’t just have a Halo wedding cake — they went all out! The justice of the peace wore a Master Chief outfit, the tux and wedding dress had their avatars embedded on it and Desirai even walked down the aisle with the Halo soundtrack.

After the jump, watch footage of their ceremony and either laugh or cry at them! We think most will laugh — we certainly did! But we do wish them the best of luck! (more…)

Most Popular ‘Online’ Xbox 360 Games of 2008

Microsoft recently revealed a few lists of games showing the most played titles online in 2008 via the Xbox 360. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting that there are two games prior to 2008 that beat out one of the biggest games of the year, Grand Theft Auto IV.

Its also great to see some classic games are still making a move in the gaming industry through Xbox Live Arcade, such as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Doom.

Check out the full lists after the jump! (more…)

Bungie: “Don’t Be Stupid and Install Halo 3 On Your Hard Drive”*

One of the cooler benefits of the ‘New Xbox Experience‘ (NXE) for the Xbox 360 is the ability to install games onto your hard drive. The point of this feature is to have your existing games to load faster than before. Meaning instead of waiting 30 seconds for a level to load — you might have to wait only half the time. Sounds like a good idea right? It is, unless you try to install Halo 3 — than you’ll have to wait even longer then if you never installed it in the first place. Bungie explained the situation on their website:

“The ‘New Xbox Experience’ [NXE] was released today and one of the new features allows you to ‘install’ your games to the HDD. While you still have to keep the original disc in the tray, installing to the HDD can make some games perform a little better while also putting a little less wear-and-tear on your DVD drive. However, this isn’t to say that ALL games will see optimizations from being installed. In fact, in the case of Halo 3, the game will actually see increased loading times. Several websites have reported the results of tests to gauge how some games perform after being installed to the HDD for Halo 3 and their tests indicate that in some cases, the load times are significantly longer. Our own internal investigations have yielded similar results.”

What does this mean if you own a copy of Halo 3 and downloaded NXE? I’ll give you a pretty simple answer — “DON’T!” Bungie also stated that they are going to “monitor this situation,” and decide if a patch would be appropriate in the future. However, the amount of time and money to develop one isn’t necessarily. So we don’t think we’ll ever see one. So in the end, listen to Bungie; Don’t install the game and you’ll live happy. :)

*Bungie never said those exact words.

Gears Sells 2.1 Million Copies on the First Day

Surprise -Surprise, Microsoft’s exclusive shooter Gears of War 2, sold incredibly well. Epic’s latest hit sold about 2.1 million copies of the critically acclaimed game and puts it in a great place to be one of the biggest titles on the system.

In the United States, Gears sold approximately 1.4 million on Friday while selling another 700,000 units in other counties. However, compared to Halo 3′s launch, Gears of War 2 would be about two-thirds short of Bungie’s first-person-shooter. However, when you compare some factors of Halo 3, what Gears did is remarkable.

Not only is Halo 3 the third game in the series — it’s Microsoft’s flagship title. Just remember the amount of money Microsoft spent for the marketing of the game — nearing the $40 million mark. Gears of War 2 didn’t nearly have the push that Halo had, so seeing what Gears did — is even more amazing.

Cool Stuff: Master Chief Helmet That You Can Wear

Just in time for Halloween, Microsoft has officially licensed this Halo helmet. As you can see from the picture above, the Master Chief mask has fantastic detail and even includes ‘dents & scratches‘ to make it seem like it went through a battle with the Covenant. Also, either side of the helmet offers LED search lights that can be turned on and off. So if you loose your keys and it’s dark — you’re all set.

Unlike the ‘free’ helmet that came with the super-duper ‘limited edition’ version of Halo 3, this one you can wear. It’ll also fit most adults and be comfortable at the same time because it is padded all around in the inside.

Of course awesomeness doesn’t come cheap, the Master Chief mask costs $115, but when you think about it, that’s a small price to pay to excrete greatness. Woman will be all over you staying away from you. But hey — who needs them when you look like Master Chief? Not me, that’s for sure!

After the jump check out more pictures.
