Most Popular ‘Online’ Xbox 360 Games of 2008

Microsoft recently revealed a few lists of games showing the most played titles online in 2008 via the Xbox 360. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting that there are two games prior to 2008 that beat out one of the biggest games of the year, Grand Theft Auto IV.

Its also great to see some classic games are still making a move in the gaming industry through Xbox Live Arcade, such as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Doom.

Entertainment Weekly’s Best & Worst Games of 2008 (Ready to Hate This List?)

Entertainment Weekly’s newest issue features their annual “Best & Worst of 2008” awards. It’s the issue were they rank their favorite and not so favorite movies, TV shows, books and so on.

In the same issue, the publication actually has a section devoted to video games. Of course, the section is one of the last pages in the magazine, but hey; at least they mentioned it, right?

Now, you might be wondering what did they choose for best game of the year and we’ll tell ya– but we want to full warn you; you might be disappointed.

If you thought the VGA’s pick of Grand Theft Auto IV was a bad decision, than I’m guessing you’re going to hate this. Are you ready? Ok — they picked Wii Fit as the best of the best of 2008. Not LittleBigPlanet, GTA or even Left 4 Dead (that didn’t even make the list). Oddly enough, the iPod Touch was ranked at number 10 — last time I check, that isn’t even a video game

We like to note that they fail to honor such great games that were released this year like; Gears of War 2, Prince of Persia, Metal Gear Solid 4, World of Goo, Left 4 Dead, Fable II, Fallout 3, Resistance 2 and many others. But for some reason, they thought Madden: All Play for the Wii was superior than those mentioned above.

EW also mentioned the “Top 3 Worst Games of 2008.” Number one was Saints Row 2, which actually had higher reviews than their top choice. Number two was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which honestly wasn’t horrible. And their number three worst game…EA’s Facebook Scrabble…why is that even mentioned!?

After the jump, check out the full list and feel free to complain. (more…)

Game Deals: GTA IV for under $40

Most likely when the year ends, Grand Theft Auto IV will probably win the most ‘Game of the Year‘ awards. Almost every gaming journalist I’ve spoken to all seem to agree Rockstar’s masterpiece will win the prestige honor.

Amazon is offering a terrific deal for the sandbox game. The site is selling GTA IV for only $37.99 for the Xbox 360 and $39.99 for the PlayStation 3. Considering the game is generally retailed at $60, this is a great time to buy the game. So, if you have yet to purchase the Grand Theft Auto IV — you have no excuse now.

Video: GTA IV’s Movie Editor for the PC

Guess what console gamers, the hardcore PC gamers get a better version of the game that will probably win ‘game of the year,’ from most sites. Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC is getting a ‘movie editor’ included in the sandbox, and it looks deep. In the video above, Rockstar shows off the feature in a clip montage.

Sure the PS3 version looks ‘slightly’ better than Xbox 360 and the 360 has exclusive DLC. I personally would rather would the video editor and would spend additional countless hours toying with it. Oh well, — looks like I might have to re-buy GTA IV.

GTA IV: DLC Explained and Dated for Feb. 17

It’s about freaking time, Rockstar Games has finally announced when and what the downloadable content featured in Grand Theft Auto IV when/will be. First, the DLC as expected will be exclusively for the Xbox 360 — thanks in part to Microsoft paying the publisher a bizillion dollars before the game was released.

The content; which is going to be available on Xbox Live February 17, will be entitled “Lost and Damned,” and feature a new star named Johnny Klebitz. Not much is known about Klebitz, besides his involvement in the biker gang “The Lost,” hence the name of the episode.

Co-founder of Rockstar Games Dan Houser, discussed with USA Today about the newly announced DLC:

“Johnny is a very different character than Niko, with a very different background.  I can’t go into too much detail on the story, because we try not to give away too much plot before the game is released. But I can say that the story will show you a different side of Liberty City.”

During the original story of Grand Theft Auto IV, Niko did run into ‘The Lost,’ on several occasions. However, that doesn’t mean Niko will play a big part at all during the new story-line, Houser explained to the national newspaper. Although, he does promise a newer/deeper experience out of the DLC, “We feel like we’ve only scratched the surface in terms of the depth and detail…”

Even though we’re sure many of you are disappointed by not having an entirely new island to explore, we should be at least be happy that we’re finally going to get the DLC — and it’s only a few months away. I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of having new vehicles included with the download. For some reason I have a hunch we could see a tad more than just a story.

GTA for the DS Delayed till Next Year — Same with the DLC for GTA IV

One of the biggest announcements for Nintendo at their press briefing at this year’s E3 was RockStar developing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS. During the same conference, Nintendo confirmed the game would be released during the holiday season. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s the case anymore.

During a presentation at the BMO Capital Markets Conference, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said the ‘open-world’ DS game would be out in stores around the 2009 fiscal year. Sadly that could be anywhere from January 31, 2009 till the end of April.

It was also confirmed at the same keynote speech that the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV is likely to appear in Spring of 2009. Just to put that in perspective — GTA IV will be out for almost a year when the DLC is finally released online.

Proof Why Grand Theft Auto DLC Not Coming Out Until Next Year

While speaking with Variety, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser gave some disappointing news about the downloadable content that Xbox 360 user’s were promised to come out by the end of the year. While its still on track to be released for Microsoft exclusively, he’s just not sure if we’ll see it by the end of the year.

“Me: On another topic, I have to ask you about the “GTA IV” downloadable content you’re doing. Do you still expect that to come out this year?”

“DH: I’m not sure. It’s going well. But we don’t know a date. We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We’re still figuring out a few things. We’re more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good. It’s shaping up to be something we’re very proud of. That was our goal.”

By saying “Not sure,” we’re ‘pretty sure’ that means we won’t be seeing any new content until next year. Considering as we write this article, the date is November 9th — 52 days until the year ends. If they don’t even have a date set and their still developing it, we’re probably not seeing it till 2009.

Here is even more proof. Houser said the content of the downloadable features are still being decided upon. “It’s new territory for everybody. We’re making it up a little bit as we go along,” he said. “That’s always fun, but it makes you nervous.”

Maybe we’re reading to much into it, but doesn’t it sound like their still creating new idea’s for the game? Meaning at this point, they’re not even close to being done. Not only do they have to implement the features into the game, they need to make sure bugs/glitches are not included with the download. Because of that, it could take weeks upon weeks of testing/developing. If that is the case, next year is the earliest we’ll see the DLC.

One of the biggest games of the year here in the States is apparently doing very well in Japan. For the week ending on November 2, Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3 was number one for total copies sold, selling approximately 133,000. (PS3): 133,000
2.) Valkyrie Profile: Toga o Seoumono (DS): 80,000
3.) LittleBigPlanet (PS3): 52,000
4.) Pokémon Platinum (DS): 47,000

GTA Trophy Patch Out — Not Retroactive

If you were one of the many who bought Grand Theft Auto IV but disappointed it has yet to have any trophy support — then you might be happy. Rockstar has officially released the trophy patch, so now when you explore Liberty City, you’ll receive a small reward when you reck havoc across the city.

However, if you were hoping the patch would recognize everything you’ve done in the past — stop wishing. The patch, when downloaded — will NOT know what you have done previously so, you would in theory have to start all over if you consider yourself a trophy whore.

[Thanks to the people who sent it in]
