Boston Globe Reports on Sexism in Gaming Development

If you are a woman in the industry, there are all these little signals that you are not part of the club, that this is not your tribe. After time, it wears you down.

This was a disturbing quote in a interesting Boston Globe article yesterday, by a female game developer, who happens to also be the cofounder of a gaming studio called Green Door Labds. Marleigh Norton is her name, and she went on record with the Globe talking about some of her experiences as a female in the heart of the gaming community. And clearly, it’s not all pleasant. (more…)

Olly Moss Super Mario Poster

One of /film‘s favorite artists Olly Moss, imagined the Japanese Mario poster above. Titled: スーパーマリオ (Super Mario), the imagine depicts Princess Peach being stalked by the famed plumber’s arch-nemesis Bowser.

On a side-note, I would personally display the red version of this poster; it just gives off this uneasy sinister feel.

As of now, you can’t purchase the pictures but when (or if) you can, I’ll let you know.

ESRB Lists Game Gear Games for the 3DS

Way back when the 3DS was announced by Nintendo, it was promised that Game Gear titles would be released for the unit’s Virtual Console.

Next month will have been a year since the handheld was first sold in stores, and we have yet to see any former Game Gear games available in the digital store. But thanks to some investigative work by Tiny Cartridge, it looks like the promise made by Nintendo is on the verge of becoming fulfilled.  (more…)

Oklahoma Bill Would Tax Violent Video Games

Oklahoma State Representative William Fourkiller (D-Stilwell) has introduced a bill which would add a one-percent tax on “violent video games,” in order to help childhood obesity and bullying.

The bill, which was written on the twelfth of last month, would use the ESRB scale and only tax games that have a Teen, Mature or Adult rating. Of course, there are plenty of games rated Teen that aren’t considered violent by the ESRB. (more…)

THQ Facing Delisting, CEO Takes Pay Cut, Jobs Lost

For the past two-decades, THQ has been a top publisher. But lately, the company is having major financial trouble, to say lightly.

Just yesterday, Nasdaq has given the company until July 23 to raise their share price above $1 for ten consecutive days, or they’ll be force to be delisted.

Because of the dreadful notice, the company has already started to take action and have announced some major overhauls and changes. (more…)

Pink 3DS Coming February 10

“Roses are red; violets are blue; I just bought a pink 3DS for you.”

Just in time for Valentines Day, Nintendo will introduce a new color for the 3DS system: pink. Officially called Pearl Pink 3DS, the device will debut on February 10, and retail for $169.99, and will not include a video game.

No question, Nintendo grabbed the very profitable female demographic with the original DS. And by releasing a pink version of its successor, Nintendo undoubtedly feels it could give some women the little incentive to upgrade.

The Circle Pad Pro Priced and Dated

One of the biggest criticisms of the 3DS (besides the battery life) is the lack of a second analog stick. Nintendo has realized that maybe the design of the hardware is flawed and trying to fix some of the complaints.

Not to long ago, they announced an attachment for the handheld that would allow games to control with dual-analogs. The downfall of the accessory is it would require one AAA battery, but thankfully that would give it about 480 hours of playtime.

The Circle Pad Pro‘ has just been released in Japan, and gamers have the option of picking up the unit with Resident Evil included, but sadly Americans won’t get the same package. (more…)

PETA Releases a Game that Depicts Mario as an Animal Killer

Yesterday, Super Mario 3D Land was released in the US and with glowing reviews. Today, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has released a parody game on their website called Super Tanooki Skin 2D, that shows Mario in a different light.

PETA gives the perspective of Mario being a blood-trusty, fur-wearing, manic, which you can kinda see in the picture above. And PETA believes that’s a correct because Mario occasionally wears a Tanooki suit in his latest game.

Their reason for this, is detailed after the jump. (more…)
