CryTek Opens Austin Studio, Core Employees are From Vigil Games

Update: It has been confirmed that ALL the employees of the US CryTek studio are former Vigil Games workers. In total, there will be 36 employees.

If you’re like me, one of the more disappointing aspects of seeing THQ’s demise, was the inability for Vigil Games to find a suitable buyer for their studio and video-game series Darksiders. The two installments were great fun; however, I’m assuming potential buyers of the studio only looked at the bottom-line of how their only series sold, and the fact of the matter is they were less than stellar. So it just seems like Darksiders will disappear like the title’s publisher. Although, I think THQ’s marketing of the games is more to blame, than the actual game itself, so I find this a mistake for publishers pass-up.

Anways, in a surprising move, Crytek, makers of the Farcry series, has just opened a new studio in Austin, TX and the staffing includes the core of employees who worked at Vigil Games just a week ago. (more…)

Disney CEO Reviewing Its Violence Games; Is Marvel and LucasArts excluded?

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger is taking steps to prevent unwanted violence in his company’s video games, following the tragic school-shooting of Newtown, CT, according to Deadspin.

His quote was from a Q&A at HRTS Newsmakers Luncheon, which also included Hollywood-producer Brian Grazer. “Fortunately at Disney there’s very little [violent content], but I still want to make sure we’re asking ourselves the right questions in terms of that standard,” Iger said, “and also [ensure] we’re willing to be a part of a dialogue in today’s world that I think is pretty necessary in terms of what our role is and what our role should be.

While most seem to agree that Disney has very little violent content in their video-games, they do own a few video-game intellectual properties that could, in theory, be toned-down when it comes to violence. (more…)

Boston Globe Reports on Sexism in Gaming Development

If you are a woman in the industry, there are all these little signals that you are not part of the club, that this is not your tribe. After time, it wears you down.

This was a disturbing quote in a interesting Boston Globe article yesterday, by a female game developer, who happens to also be the cofounder of a gaming studio called Green Door Labds. Marleigh Norton is her name, and she went on record with the Globe talking about some of her experiences as a female in the heart of the gaming community. And clearly, it’s not all pleasant. (more…)

Kinect for Windows Now Available

Today Microsoft has announced that they have started to sell Kinect for Windows. The device, which is essentially the same as the Xbox 360 version, will retail for $250.

Now before you try and purchase the peripheral for your home computer, be warned, this isn’t for controlling anything…just yet. Instead, the company has released it for developers in hopes of having an abundant of third party applications for future PCs and possibly for the Xbox down the line.

Microsoft also hopes that business will rely on the product because of how simple and “intuitive” a person can navigate a program, with using just voice and/or hand gestures. But the only way that can be built, is allowing developers to have access to a specifically-built Windows version.
