Job Listing Suggests The Return Of The MLB 2K Franchise

Last year, 2K Sports announced they were halting development on their MLB 2K series.

We have decided not to renew our MLB 2K series for 2014,” read a statement from a company earlier in the year. “We are very proud of the achievements made by the MLB 2K team and look forward to their contributions to our future titles.”

Many outlets, rightfully so, took it as if the company was abandoning baseball altogether. We’ve might have spoken too soon.

A job listing has popped up on the Visual Concepts’ website for a UI (user interface) artist for a next-generation system. “UI is an important part of sports videogames, and great user interfaces help make the action more intense and the user experience more accessible,” the listing read. If you continue to pore over the ad, just under “skills,” and the game they’ll be developing for will be on next-generation hardware, you’ll see it says:

“• Interest in sports including baseball”

If the candidate was just developing a basketball game, than why would they want his or hers interest to include baseball. I should also point out the company never admitted they were canceling the MLB 2K series, they were simply not going to renew the game for the 2014 season. Go-ahead, scroll up and reread the company’s official statement.

The MLB 2K series has been dreadful. Their sales weren’t huge, and if remember, it was the only title on a Microsoft machine and it was panned by critics. The PlayStation has seen great success with their MLB The Show franchise. Many critics and fans alike consider it to be one of the best sports franchises around. And sales tend to be strong for the game. According to Sony, The Show for the PlayStation 4 is the fastest selling game in franchise history.

So what I’m trying to get at is the MLB 2K series hasn’t been able to compete. And considering 2K’s NBA and WWE game are usually titles that see success, MLB was the odd game out. It didn’t live up to the company’s quality.

There is a possibility, and a strong one, that 2K made a decision to take a year off. So the team, or another team for that matter, can rebuild the franchise from the ground up on next generation hardware. If that’s the case, it would be the only big-budget baseball game on the Xbox One, and if done right, they could finally compete agains The Show on PlayStation 4.
If that’s the direction the company took, and I think it is, I say: “bravo.”
