L.A. Noire Gag Reel, Shows Off Its Impressive Face Technology
The big technological leap that Rockstar was touting for L.A. Noire was the state-of-the-art facial technology the game provided. The complex feature was to give players a glimpse of how each character was reacting to detectives questions they were providing to non-playable characters. The idea of implementing that element was for a better understanding of if character was lying to you. It was a pretty remarkable to see in person, and it definitely added a different type of value to the game. And it’s something that we hope we see in future Rockstar titles.
If you don’t know, the entire game was motion capture, and because actors were present to represent the characters, there’s a blooper reel. And above is that very clip of the actors screwing up their lines. These bloopers are entertaining, but it’s nothing that you haven’t seen before on a DVD special feature. What is incredible is how the motion capture and the facial technology picked up everything, from actors sticking out their tongue because of dialogue twisting, to their entire face shuttering because of a sneeze, you see everything.
It’s not a very long clip, but it’s definitely worth checking out, it’s also going to make you want more companies to utilize this type of technology in the future. One of the biggest complaints I have personally with characters in most games, is there’s no emotion, there’s no soul. There is just dialogue.
But yet up top, you can feel the character’s soul, but you can also see actor get out of their character because of something they screwed up. It happens right before your eyes, and it should impress anyone into video-games.
