ESRB Lists Game Gear Games for the 3DS
Way back when the 3DS was announced by Nintendo, it was promised that Game Gear titles would be released for the unit’s Virtual Console.
Next month will have been a year since the handheld was first sold in stores, and we have yet to see any former Game Gear games available in the digital store. But thanks to some investigative work by Tiny Cartridge, it looks like the promise made by Nintendo is on the verge of becoming fulfilled.
According to the ESRB website, the company has rated two classic Game Gear games for the 3DS: Sonic Triple Trouble and Shinobi. No word yet on when these titles, or if any more, are expected to be on the Virtual Console.
Sonic Triple Trouble was the sequel to the first Game Gear installment of Sonic, titled Sonic Chaos. Released in 1994, but the reviews were mixed. While visually it was the closes Game Gear that looked like a Genesis title, critics still felt that the systems power was underwhelming and overall hurt the game.
The Game Gear’s version Shinobi had game mechanics similar to the 1989 Genesis game Revenge of Shinobi. But the same power limitations ultimately hurt the ability of the game to become a classic.
All in all, Game Gear games have a hard time being able to stay relevant and don’t age well. Sure, if you download them on your 3DS, you live for a few minutes in nostalgia nirvana. But soon as that passes, you’ll wonder why you spent the few dollars they’ll probably cost.
